Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest apparel exporter, and knitwear is its strongest category. But with thousands of factories and trading companies to choose from, picking the right export partner takes more than comparing prices. Here is a practical checklist for evaluating a Bangladesh knitwear exporter.
Compliance and certifications first
Start with the non-negotiables. Ask for current certifications such as OEKO-TEX for product safety, and social compliance audits such as BSCI or Sedex SMETA. A credible exporter shares audit reports willingly. If a supplier is vague about compliance, treat that as a warning sign regardless of how attractive the pricing looks.
Match capacity to your needs
A factory producing millions of pieces a month may deprioritize your 5,000-piece order; a small workshop may struggle with your 200,000-piece program. Ask about monthly capacity, current order book and the typical order sizes they handle. The right partner is one where your business matters enough to get attention but not so large that it strains their operation.
Test sampling speed and communication
Sampling reveals how a factory really works. Note how long the first proto sample takes, how accurately it matches your tech pack, and how quickly revisions are turned around. Equally important is communication: clear English, a dedicated merchandiser, and proactive updates about delays beat the lowest quote every time.
Fabric sourcing and vertical setup
Exporters with in-house knitting, dyeing and finishing control quality and lead times far better than those who outsource every step. Ask where fabric comes from, whether lab dips and strike-offs are done internally, and what happens when a dye lot goes wrong.
Verify with references and visits
Ask for buyer references in your market and follow up with them. If possible, visit the factory or send a third-party inspector. A one-day visit tells you more about cutting floors, worker conditions and housekeeping than months of email exchanges.
